University of Waikato International Excellence Scholarship

“Description in brief:

The Overseas Excellence Scholarship is offered by the University of Waikato to talented international students from qualified countries who are enrolling for the first time in undergraduate or postgraduate programmes at the university. The Scholarships will be given to students who have excelled academically and have the potential to be global ambassadors for the University of Waikato.

Scholarship worth/benefits:

The Scholarship will be worth up to NZD 10,000 and will be transferred immediately to the recipient’s tuition expenses for their selected program(s) of study, either at the time of offer or after they have finished their enrolment. The amount offered will be determined by factors such as total available funding, grades, financial need, number of credits enrolled, number of applications, and enrollment time.


In order to be considered, applicants must:

a) be a citizen of one of the nations listed above, or currently studying there;

b) not be enrolled in a pre-degree route course at the University of Waikato (including the Certificate of Attainment in Academic English, the Certificate of Attainment in Foundation Studies, the International Diploma of Business or Science, or any other pre-degree pathway programme);

c) not have paid fees at the time of application; d) be a new student to the University of Waikato applying to enrol in an undergraduate or postgraduate course;

e) not be considered a domestic student (see 7.3.d);

f) have met the University of Waikato’s English language criteria for admission, or have been offered the University of Waikato’s Certificate of Attainment in Academic English, before beginning any UOW programs;

g) have been offered a place at the University of Waikato, either conditionally or unconditionally;

h) Begin a full-time program/s of study at the University of Waikato in the year of tenure, with a total duration of at least 12 months;

I must reside in New Zealand for the duration of the scholarship and may only study up to 50% of their degree online (if this is an option);

j) not be a sponsored student at the University of Waikato;

k) will not be attending the University of Waikato under a Guaranteed Credit Arrangement or as part of a study abroad or student exchange program;

l) have a minimum B+ GPA equivalent.

Instructions for applying:

Applications for the scholarship for 2021 can be submitted at any time, but applicants must be overseas at the time of submission and must submit their scholarship application before applying for a visa to visit New Zealand. They must provide a personal statement that addresses the following issues:

• What are your professional ambitions?
• How can international education assist you attain these objectives?
• What other traits or skills do you possess that make you a great candidate for this scholarship and a University of Waikato ambassador?
